I have a Canon 1-D Mark 111 and will be adjusting my lenses with the microadjustment (C.FN3-7) and I was wondering if I should be far or close to my target to get the most out of focus area? I know that I have to be wide open with the aperture but not sure about distance.

Neither, you want to be in the optimum range of the lens. If you are too close focus is often not the best and too far away and again focus will struggle. So for 50mm+ lenses probably 10' is a good range (you could go less for a 50), over 150mm I would go further out to say 20', over 300 then you can go further still.

As said don't go too far or too close. I have 2 canons with microadjustment and found that non of my Canon glass needed anything it was only my Sigma lenses that needed a tweak.

I want the lens to be at the worst range to show the most out of focus so I can adjust it that way my sweet spot will be sweeter. I am looking for the lens to show the most back or forward focus so I can adjust it to the best focus.

Which lens/lenses do you want to adjust?
