Need help with outdoor group picture at 1:00 pm on sunny day

:!:
Help! I have to take group outdoor picture of my daughter's soccer team at midday. (1:00 pm) It is supposed to be HOT and sunny tomorrow when the photo is scheduled.
How can I get the best photo under these circumstances? We will be going to a fire station and the girls will be on the fire truck, many with firefighter hats and gear.
I have a Dimage 7i (5mp) and I do not have an external flash.
Thank you for any help you can offer! This photo will be enlarged for their 2003 fund raising poster of their team.

maybe for starters, keep the sun behind you (at 1 pm it's probably overhead), bracket a lot of exposures and maybe use your flash to fill in the shadows from the sun above as faces may be hidden in shadow from the firehats. if there is any shade take them in the shade and use fill in flash. just my 2 cents worth.

Well just remember to meter off of a midtoned subject and not anything superbright like the fire engine, otherwise your subject may be underexposed.

If you don't have an external flash unit, and you think the internal one may not be able to fill-in enough, maybe you can use some white foamboard as reflectors. You may need an assistant to hold them in place, but it should help soften up harsh shadows.
