Just maybe the future of DLSRs is not reworked 35mm film bodies with moving mirrors. The prism splitter design of the E-10/20 works well and I expect it will be incorporated into the 4/3 cameras. Of course lenses will have to be designed with the prism as part of the optical design but thr 4/3 system is being designed from scratch anyway.

They could design a simple "protection curtain" which open once the lens is in place ...

Another choice is to use EVF rather than a prism. Then there is no need for a mirror, the placement of the VF is VERY flexible, and one can incorporate a piece of glass or even a plastic with very low refraction in front of the sensor but out of the image plane so any dust should not show up.

If you use an EVF then it's not an SLR. EVF technology is still a long way from being a viable substitute for a ground glass focusing screen.

I would no doubt like the framing of pictures through the E-20 or dSLRs viewfinders, but EVF has its benefit as well:
o WYSIWYG o Lighter than optic o Real-Time histogram (+ grid & scale) o Color keyed Head-Up display of exposure information o Probably cheaper to build (and to buy) o and the Night Vision system which you're well aware of ... Just like CCDs as the EVF resolution increases they'll put more pressure on ground-glass. Kopin's displays for example... [Edited on 10-4-2002 by NHL] |

I was an EVF skeptic until I bought a 5700. EVF is different than ground glass but I ma not sure it is inferior. Moreover, EVF may be better than SLR once some image processing is added .. e.g, to enhance focussing or allow zooming in the finder.

As long as the EVF cameras can hold their 2:1 cost advantage over dSLR, their lightness (peole still think the D7 is made of plastic!), and all their functional features flexibilities, there's a huge market share for them.
Can somebody please come out with an interchangeable lens EVF? Dust problem not withstanding... [Edited on 10-6-2002 by NHL] |

Because an EVF does not require a prism or mirror, I 'spect that it would be fairly easy to protect the chip from dust.
