Well, you can't expect to get night photos that are as good as photos in daylight. You've got too much contrast in a night photo (due to the brighter street lights, versus the darker shadow areas). Also, the camera's noise reduction will reduce detail in a photo, since it is needed to reduce the hot pixels you'd get with longer exposures with a smaller CCD.
Light is a Digital Camera's best friend. I'd make sure you set focus to infinity (versus using Autofocus), if you didn't do this for the shot. You may also want to use a smaller aperture, respresented by a higher f/stop number (versus shooting "wide open" at f/2.8 ). You'll need to experiment with exposure times for best results. With a scene like this one, you'll either have a choice of less halos around the bright lights with darker shadow areas; or more halos around the bright lights withlighter shadow areas. There really isn't a way to have both properly exposed (unless you take multiple exposures, and combine them later with software). You may also wantto experiment withwhite balance settings. |

This is something little, but try to watch what you are shooting before you shoot it. You have people shadows at the bottom of the pic. This can be cropped out though.

Regardless of the "people shadows" or halo's around the street lights I think that's a pretty cool picture. I love night shots with digital camera's. Here is a night shot I recently took just before the sun was completely down. This was taken with my Sony DSC-S30 Cybershot.
