Newbie to the digital world needs advice!
I have read many reviews and I have narrowed my search to 2 cameras...Nikon 5700 and the Fuji S602. I wanted at least a 6X zoom that takes great pictures, including macro shots. Although they both appear to be great cameras, the Nikon has a longer zoom and appeared to take better closeup shots. I want to buy my first digital camera that will last many years without wanting/needing upgrades or new features. I also want to teach my 16 yo son about photography, not just always pointing and shooting. It appears I am leaning towards the Nikon but I want to make sure it is worth the extra money. I also want to not buy another camera for 10 years or more (this will be only the third camera I have purchased in 30 years). Your opinions help as much as the reviews! Thanks!!! |

Mostly because of the review on dpreview comparing both cameras...Nikon came out better in image quality and it can take closer macro shots. Otherwise, the Minolta sounded good. Users seem to like it. It is not totally ruled out yet, but it is currnetly in third place...unless I convinced otherwise!

after going over and over and over about the quality of the nikon image over the 7 series image i found a few details.
noise reduction- all images have noise in them . all cameras have noise reduction algorithims in their post processing. some more than others. i have now used the 7 series and the 5700 often enough to say i'll stick with the 7Hi. why? sometimes the 5700 gets a little overly ambitious reducing what it perceives as noise and removes a bit if detail(smoothing where it really isn't). not all the time but it just demonstrates that there is no perfect camera or noise reduction algorithim. now the reason for staying with the 7Hi is simple, it performs as a camera better over all than others i have used. as far as the noise issue i purchased Neat Image Pro and custom profile every image i'm going to produce on paper. with this program i choose what is going to be removed/subdued. i control the noise reduction process. therefore it's all my fault if it doesn't work out. the rest of the darkroom work is done using PS. whats really good about NI is i can use it with any image from any camera because they all have noise. my 2 cents |

Hey PT guy - I have been going through the same process myself and I have decided on the S602 Special Edition. The reason? I was at my local photo shop on Monday playing around with both the Nikon 5700 and the Fuji 602. I got to talking with one of the owners and he mentioned that three of the senior staff, including himself, had all purchased the Fufi S602 and were absently delighted with all aspects of the camera. That sold me.

I was at my local camera store 3 days ago with the same question. The store manager told me he can buy Nikons for cost, and would have the Fuji s602 over the Nikon 5700.
