Both these programmes have worked really well for me but sometimes I get a shot that no matter what settings I use it looks way too smooth so I end up keeping the noise in the photo, any Ideas why this happens:?

Is there a lot of contrast more or less evenly distributed in the photo and/or areas that are significantly lighter or darker?
You might look into a "plug in" program called "Color Magic" from Digital Light and Color" if you do not already have it? When you change the color of a sky with this program you will often see "noise" pop out as another color. You can then edit this out as you wish. Besides all that it is a fun program from a great company. |

In photoshop I create a layer, use the despeckle filter then adjust the opacity toreduce the extra smoothness. Is there a way to adjust the amount of the fix?

In Neat Image you can reduce the amount of noise you remove, and you can also change what type of noise you remove (high frequence or low frequency, maybe others?)
In my shots (which are exclusively outdoors and almost always with birds in them) if I train it badly or there is a lot of dark area (or some times... who know why?) I find that full noise removal removes detail from the shot. So I have to lower how much I remove. I have heard people who do candid people shots that if they remove too much noise they get the same effect you are getting. So they change the setting to remove less. I've never heard of "noiseworks" do you have a link? Google showed me a product with that name to remove noise from audio recordings, but not from pictures. Eric |
