Hello
Any suggestions on online photo saving sites that when uploaded don't alter your photo? Looks like some might make the image smaller when uploaded. Thanks Warren |

Flickr preserves the original resolution of an uploaded image, so you can download it later, so you can let others download it, and so the full resolution image is used to make prints.

Most photo sites have a default display size which is smaller than the image
size from a typical camera. At a time when digital photo resolution is increasing and web browser screens are shrinking rapidly, this is the only sensible approach. Even if you have a 24in 1920x1080 monitor, a 2.1MP image will completely fill the screen if you view at 100% I use an Irish photo site http://www.pix.ie They have a default view size of 800 pixels on the longest side. You can view the image at 100% by clicking on "Original" as the image size. http://pix.ie/corkpix/2407835/size/800 |

DPReview preserves your original image, although only displays smaller sizes unless you explicitly select the original image for display (assuming that the original image is larger than the largest size that they are willing to display by default, which is something like 1600 x 1200). The DPReview gallery is still in beta, and will only accept JPEGs at this point. There is going to be a paid option at some point in the future that will have unlimited uploads and vanity site names, etc. But the max now is something like 200MB per month and a total of something like 1000 images that can be hosted for free. So it will probably take a while to exhaust that anyway.
The one inconvenient thing about DPReview is that there is no good way to use it to post on this site, because the sizes are wrong. The default 3-size images of DPReview are either too small or too large for display here, and the only way to get another size is to resize on your computer and upload as a separate thing. It would be nice if either DPReview or Steve's would support custom resize so I could just link a large image and not worry about it, but currently neither end appears to do that. Thanks everyone. I am going to try pix.ie for now but any other suggestions are welcomed.

I use Photobucket, but they have a maximum file size for the free accounts, so if you don't plan on resizing before uploading, it may not be right for you. For a number of reasons, I prefer to downsize my photos before posting anywhere on the web.

I use zenfolio and really like it. It's not free but the annual charge is quite reasonable, you can upload full sized files and there's no advertising. You can also change the background and look of the album. It also doesn't strip out the exif information, like some sites do.

Although, I have tried most of the popular share site, I host my own on through my webhost. I use Piwigo as my gallery software.
