Painting night shots with flash lights?

Want to try it with my XSI tonight. Anyone have any experience doing this? Heard you just do a slow shutter speed and "color" the item you are shooting with a flashlight.
Tips?
Tricks?
How tos?
Photos of your own shots like this?

So, how did you do? This isn't something I have tried. Sounds like the 'painting with light' technique, using bulb mode or long shutter opening and writing a message with a light or laser.

Partly depends on what you want to do - I've done some shots where I had a dark room, used a light to draw around something, and the flash to make the scene normally lit. I haven't tried but have seen shots that did something similar (using LED lights or something similar) but without the flash, using ambient light for the exposure (haven't done this). There's also shots I've seen where you use a flashlight to light up specific places in a scene (tried this in passing, but didn't work at it enough to figure out shutter speeds I should have used). A good tripod and a remote would help with all of these.

How did you do?

if flashlights doesnot change position, it can give great results but otherwise objects and shadows will look weird. it looks exciting, i will give a try to this.

I haven't tried it yet, need to find a good flashlight! I do have a remote, so i'll use that for sure.
