Default Panasonic DCM-TS3 (FT3) vs Sony DSC-TX5

Hello all,
I've been reading Steve's for years and it has to be the best place for camera info.
After many Sony digicams years ago I wanted a quality waterproof camera and purchased a TS1, absolutely amazing photos for a point and shoot. After 22 months it just quit working, no damage or water intrusion.
I wanted the new TS3 but not the cost if it might only live two years, thought about the TS10, but it does not have wide angle.
On paper the Sony fit the bill and it is very small, (bonus).
After using the Sony for two months now, I am not very thrilled with the results. At 100% crop, photos taken in intelligent Ai mode on both cameras, (TS1,TX5), leaves the Sony shots much less crisp. I keep going back and looking at last years photos wishing the new ones looked that good. I don't care how much it costs, if they don't look good, you can't go back and retake the photos.
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but then again it was automatic on the Panny and turned out just fine. Maybe it's simply the higher resolution of the Panny 14mp over the Sony 10mp, but all the reviews I've read say the Sony takes amazing shots in this category. I really like the waterproof aspect and take it to the beach quite regularly, but I just don't think the Sony is living up to expectations. I'm thinking of getting the TS3 or TX10 if I can't get the Sony to perform better.
Looking forward to some input.

PS After only two months the colored coating is peeling off my Sony, they will fix for 7$ shipping, but I'm out a camera in the mean time.
