Why is it that I can buy a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 for AU$450 if I order from the USA, whereas in Australia, the price is closer to $620? If I did order it from the USA, would the postage costs and insurance bring the price up to $600 anyway?

There are a variety of reasons.
1- they charge what they think the market will bare. There is a lot of competition in the US, so they might have to charge less to get noticed.
2-Australia might have import duties that raise the prices. Or higher taxes/tarifs on electronic goods.

There are probably other reasons, but those come to mind.

For some cameras (DSLRs, for example) they are cheaper some other countries, and more expensive in others. This is why some stores offer "gray market" or "imported" cameras that are cheaper. Ya, its cheaper to buy abroad and import them into the US. Weird, but true. So the camera makers don't honor warrenties from those countries in the US.
