Question about video camera audio

Hi there. I have a zi10 Kodak. I'm trying different instrument mics, condenser and dynamic. I have an adaptor that goes xlr > 1/8" stereo.

I'm having a problem getting good audio. Seem a good self powered (9v battery) condenser works alright, but the audio just isn't there. I also have to boost the mic level on the zi10 up quite a bit. The dynamic mic? Forget it, can't even hear the thing with the mic level maxxed.

I'm wondering if it would be better to get one of those small external mics?

I'm recording acoustic guitar stuff. I'm not looking for studio quality, but something 1/2 decent live sound.
