Is there a rule to how much you can step up or step down when using a filter for multiple lens?

I have 3 main lens that I want to use a Circular Polarizer Filter on and they range in different size.
It goes from 62mm, 72mm and 77mm. So is can I buy a 77mm filter and use it in all of my lens? Is going from 77mm to 62mm too much of a drop? Or how about from 77mm to 72mm?

Almost always a step up adapter will work. Almost always a step down adapter will cause vignetting. The most common problem with a step up adapter occurs when the addapter is thick and the lens is wide angle. The most common exception to vignetting with a step down lens occurs at the long end of a zoom lens.

If you step down from 77mm to either 62 or 72, you may not be able to use your hood.

Yea it makes sense not to step down from 77mm to 62mm. The lens that I really want the CPL filter is for my Sigma 10-20mm which is 77mm. The problem with having such a wide angle lens is the filter can't be too tall. Ususally it isn't a problem with other filters, but CPL filter tend to be taller then most. I was told that if the filter is no taller then 5mm it will work on the wide angle sigma.

I guess I will get the 77mm and buy a step up from 62mm and the 72mm.

I am no too concern about using the lens hood though, but that is nice to know.

Thanks for the tip the both of you.
