ImagingResource on-line has a great tool for just what you are trying to do...side by side comparisons of the same images taken by different camera models. It's called the Comparometer...here's the link:

Yah, don't put too much faith in the sample pics on these digital camera review websites. They are in a hurry taking photos when new cameras come out and I think some aren't even taken properly. You need to go to a website like www.pbase.com to be able to see a variety of photos taken by different people in different conditions. Yah some of them don't know how to take pictures but some do and they're good. Just make sure you view lots of different images to make up your mind about which camera you like. I found the sample pics on this website and other "commercial" websites are poor.
