Ever since I started joining forums like this one (I freely give my email) I get lots of unwanted spam from the spam cretins.
Anyone know any good freebie anti-spam software? I know I could clear my email address but I'm reluctant to do so and they can also get it from my website anyway. I'm know getting 40 emails/day from these morons. |

Try Mailwasher.net. It's shareware without nagging. I was impressed enough to pay the $20 fee. It sets up blacklists and sends back a message telling the sender that yours is an invalid address. When (or rather, if) the idiots update their lists, your name will be deleted. I like the fact that it works on the mail on the server so it doesn't get downloaded till you want it.

Hiya Steve
Are you picking up your mail via web based email or your main email client ? If the latter and if using Outlook/Express you can set up rules that will delete emails from certain senders, containing certain words in subject etc. You can set it up to delete mails directly from the server so they don't even get downloaded to your PC. I am careful what I use my main email address/prog for and use web based email providers and use pseudonyms to avoid getting spammed. Hope that helps :-) Stef |

I'll second Wildman's suggestion. www.mailwasher.net I use mailwasher at work and it works very well. If you don't want to use its rules based systems, it can also hook into orbs and a few other spam lists to automate filtering. I find it easy to use and it does all I want. It can even fake bounce the email so that they think the account is invalid. ![]() Eric |

I had a major problem with porn, up to 40/day for months. I did everything by the way of filtering some of which worked very well but also blocked some mail that I wanted. Rule #1. don't send anything back, you will get put on another list. Rule #2. check your address book often for people or sites you do not reconize. Many mailing programs read address books and use parts of addresses to make up new lists. Rule #3. Run frequent checks to see WHO might me loged into your system....run windows "find" for the word "keylogger", for example. Rule #4 change your e-mail address That is what finnally worked for me.
I think there are a few in this world that would like to bring down the internet. |

Everytime I look at the SPAM in my 'coldmail' account, with few exceptions the header reports blocked by 'spamcop' so I've often thought an annual sub to their proxy server service might be worthwhile. Or perhaps they're just sending out the spam to sell their service!!

I also use Mailwasher but have been persuaded recently that using the "bounce" option is at best a waste of time. The current crop of spam does not carry a valid sender's address to which the message can be bounced: instead the sender's address appears to be randomised in the same way as the recipient's. In this case, at best your bounce will go nowhere: at worst it will end up in some innocent person's inbox.
A further problem is that these randomised sender addresses are difficult to intercept: because they are only used once they don't find their way on to the spam blacklists Mailwasher uses. It's also pretty useless adding them to your own blacklist for the same reason. One thing I have noticed is that the sender address often includes the RECIPIENT'S (i.e. MY) email domain: this can be used as the basis for a filter. Mailwasher does have an auto-delete option for all email it classifies as spam: so far I can't quite pluck up the courage to use it. It would, however, be a relief not to have to plough through 20 or 30 ads daily for septic tanks, pharmaceuticals, cable TV cards and - of course - enhancements for my virility. I feel justified in adding that I am very suspicious of DP Review's forums. That site uses tracker ads that regularly trigger the personal security settings in my firewall when they try to acquire my email address. So far, I have detected no such nasties on this site. fenlander |

Why not get a yahoo mail account? It has great anti-spam software, in fact i give out my email a lot and with yahoo i rarely get junk mail as opposed to my aol account i used to have. Yahoo mail even has the option of reporting spam messages to yahoo so they can better their spam guards, best of all, its free.
