SVCD Vs VCD

Opened a can of worms here.

There are two DVD players in my house, none have an RF input. The one in the lounge is scarted and the one in my son's bedroom uses yellow, red and white jack plugs. These give him a better picture than the scart. The scart produced ghosting from BBC1 but not the jack plugs?

I still don't understand why the picture quality when viewing JPEGS is so very poor though

Are you sure it's not a faulty cable (ie cross coupling)? The RF input is where one normally get interference or RF beat, or could you have use an inexpensive unshielded SCART cable may be? SCART pin19, pin1, and pin3 are the yellow, red and white respectively jack plugs that you can get an adapter for: http://www.amabilidade2002.com/scart3.htm

Is this from the digital camera or from a CD that you output from the DVD player? A video output form a digicam is usually sub-standard and is only designed to drive the limited bandwith of the rear LCD...

Jpegs are on a CDR viewing via a DVD player.

I would get the above SCART to RCA adapter cable and try your DVD player on your son TV...

How does this CDR quality when it plays on your son's setup? Have you resize the jpegs from the camera or are they originals and just copied to the CDR?

They're pretty much the original Jpegs. No resizing etc.

Steve, I just wanted to say that I did a comparison between VCD and SVCD myself for digital video, and SVCD was the clear winner for image quality hands down.

(The only downside was that my uber-expensive-soak-the-early-adopter Pioneer DVD player doesn't play SVCD, while the $100 special I bought for my folks plays them just fine!) :evil:

Interesting that, I couldn't really see the difference. If anything I thought my VCDs were better than the SVCDs I down loaded from picturetoTV demo shots.

It may be that there's a difference between the two compression algorithms (MPEG-1 for VCD, MPEG-2 for SVCD) with stills vs. video.
