Default Taking Photos in foggy conditions

Hi Everyone,
As I was taking my son to school this morning there was a thick blanket of fog which is common during the winter months in Idaho. As the sun was rising it was gorgeous but I didn't have my camera with me

There will be many other opportunities this winter and was wondering what sort of settings would be most appropriate under these conditions.

The camera I use is a Pentax K2000.

Thanks in advance
