Most readers are becoming 'generic' commodity now. However, I'd only buy a reader that worked with the CFprep/SMprep/XDprep card reformat utilities. These utilities, which I think are written by SM micro, are supplied and certainly work in their own 'Dazzle' brand readers.

They only run with a particular reader chipset. So if the reader you are looking at isn't Dazzle, and doesn't ship with these utilities on CDROM. You take a chance, as you can hardly open it up in the shop to see what chipsets's inside! Although I've got the Dazzle 6in1, I dislike the lack of card eject button. Pulling out any card or expensive Microdrives has to be a more careful operation.
