The max resolution size (pixels) for my camera is 2272 x 1704 (Large, Superfine). If you multiply those numbers together you get 3.871 Megapixels.
Is this industry standard for 4 mega cameras? Is Canon cheating here or is rounding from 3.87 to 4.0 acceptable? Lastly, is there going to be any noticable difference between a 3.87 and a 4.0 Megapixel camera? Thank you. |

If you read the specs it uses a 4.1mp sensor, and like everything else in computers they use the better sounding number even if that number isn't used in reality.

Those other pixels are used, just not in the image. There has to be some pixels outside the viewing area so the Bayer patern works to the edge of the final image. Also some of them are used to get "dark current" values for noise reduction (I think).
But basicaly Mike_PEAT is right, whenever they can find a way to exagerate, they will. |

Just think of hard drives...manufacturers will list the unformatted capacity because it's a larger number. After you format it with all the information you need like sector map, track and sector information, FAT, etc. your actual capacity will be lower.
Printer manufacturers will list pages per minute, but that is printing the same page over and over, copying the information from the buffer as most of the time is in loading the page into the buffer. Also, they will list number of pages printable by an ink cartridge, but the amount of ink will be a lot lower than reality (maybe 15% of the page)...it just sounds better. |
