CCD digicams aren't recommended for webcam use...as the camera is in use the CCD heats up developing hot pixels, and eventually those hot pixels will become stuck pixels which will appear in every picture you take...instead spend the $20 on a webcam.

I've discovered the best thing you can use for a webcam is a digital camcorder. You won't be able to do it via firewire, but by plugging the s-video out on my camcorder to the s-video in on my TV card gives me all the advantages of a camcorder, but in webcam form. It also lets you playback tapes over the webcam, useful for Homer Simpson style playing back old footage of yourself sat at the desk, whilst you're off elsewhere
