I just bit the bullet and ordered a Canon 20D and a few lenses and accessories. What I would really like to know is how many of you use UV filters for lense protection?? I ordered a Sigma 150mm macro and a Canon 100-400mm zoom. Do you birders and nature photographers use uv filters as protection or do you use your big lenses bare and naked?? thanx in advance!!!

the better grades of 'long'glass (minolta 'g', canon 'l') such as the minolta 70-200 f/2.8 apo 'g' come with a clear glass front filter OPTICALLY DESIGNED IN SO THAT WHEN YOU USE A POLARIZER (or other filter) THE LENS REMAINS OPTICALLY THE SAME!
any aftermarket add-on will degrade (in theory) image quality due to the additional "lens element" it is an individual cost/benefit decision beach use = plastic bag w/ uv filter clouds = polarizer indoors = no filter general purpose snapshots = uv filter portraits and serious work = naked lens etc |
