Walk-around camera - lens performance test

G'day all

There is some discussion in another thread regarding 'walk around' camera & lenses and I have inserted a reference to the Panasonic FZ fixed-lens superzoom as an option

Here are some images comparing the lens of the FZ-200 at max zoom with another brand lens of 100-300mm range built for an m4/3 camera whose crop factor is 2x, therefore the image sizes should be identical

Before the test, each camera body had a factory reset to erase any user-set parameters, images were hand held using the in-camera IS system. The exif data shown below gives FZ-200 aperture first then SLRs aperture second

1- First target - a windmill, exif - 1/1000s x F3,5 [5,6], ISO-100

2- Centre image crop, two image of 900x1200px joined into new canvas

3- Second target - machinery on top of grain silo, exif 1/1000s x F2.8 [5,6] ISO-400

4- Centre image crop, two image of 900x1200px joined into new canvas

ps- I'm prepared to say the SLR image on the right has some camera shake that the IS system could not overcome

5- Third target - side of a building getting sunset colours, exif 1/1000s x F5,6 [F7,1], ISO-100

6- Centre image crop, two image of 900x1200px joined into new canvas

While I freely acknowledge that a $500 small sensor / general purpose camera cannot equal the performance of a $5000 full frame with an appropriate lens 'bolted on', the fixed lens zuperzoom cameras provide excellent value for money

Open for discussion :)

Hope this helps
Phil
