The Olympus E-500 is a fine camera, but there is no reason to think any dSLR will be better if your heart isn't into it. The real reason for using any dSLR is not basically to "produce better photographs" but to give you more control over your photography--whether better photographs are produced as a result is up to you. If you don't want nor need the control that a dSLR gives, then the bridge-type camera may be the best option (of course, dSLRs vary as well, and some provide more control than others, but I'm speaking in general here)
