Default Xacti vpc-pd2 automatically stops filming at 1/2 hour...workaround??

After purchasing the vpc-pd2 I discovered that it automatically stops filming after 1/2 hour.
I'm a performer & I purchased the unit to set up on a tripod & film some of my hour long performances. In other words i can't stop in the middle of a show to turn the camera back on again.
Anyone know of a workaround/software update for this issue, or even why Sanyo designed this camera this way? Are all of their videocams designed this way?
BTW, Sanyo's customer service was horrible. 2 months of emails before I finally got through, then the "tech person" on the other end didn't sound like they new what I was talking about. I'm not normally a complainer but really!...

The reason your camera does this is to avoid tariffs in the EU market. Some cameras will film past the 30 min limit if you shoot in conventional 640x480 rather than in HD. Alternately have an assistant turn the recording off and the back on during pauses or breaks in the performance.
