Default Your first digital camera.

What was your first digital camera? Our family's first digital camera was an 2.1 megapixel Olympus Camedia D-490 with 3x optical zoom. The two memory cards are 16mb and 8mb and the software is on a 3.5 inch floppy disk. I still have everything for the camera and it still works perfectly. It is amazing how much digital camera technology has come along in about a decade.

G'day David

Nice momentos from times past ...
My first digi was a FujiFilm S-5000, while "only" 3mpx its 10x zoom was magic
Also 'magic' was an absence of noise ~ when I review those thousands of images from 5+ yrs ago, I am unable to see noise in them

However my more recent 8mpx & 12mpx cameras are full of noise
so I often wish that old camera was still going ...

Regards, Phil
Has Lumix mirrorless & superzoom cameras and loves their amazing capabilities

In March 2003 I took the plunge with a Nikon Coolpix 5700 camera, 5 megapixel and 8x zoom. I had also bought the TC-E15ED 1.5x teleconverter and the WC-E80 -.8x wide converter to extend the range of the lens. They don't make 2/3" sensor cameras any more which is too bad since it takes great photos in a compact format.

I still have the 32mb CF card that came with the camera! It's only used to bring images for printing at a kiosk.

I could only dream of such high resolution. I had a sub-1MP Fujifilm DX10.
1999 vintage. It still works perfectly.

My first was an HP Photosmart 320. It was 2MP and used 4 AAs, if I remember right. It took 30 sec. videos in 320x240 resolution with no sound. It had a 2x or 3x digital zoom only, which was a complete joke. It wasn't even a real digital zoom. When you "zoomed" all the camera did was crop the image. I tried two different SD cards with it, and it never recorded images properly. Something was messing up that caused the images to be distorted. I hated the bloody thing, but it was given to me at the time. That was back in 2007. Needless to say, I didn't have it long.

When I got "my" first real digital camera it was lightyears ahead of the 320. It was a Samsung S85. It used two AAs, had 5x optical zoom, and 8MP. I gave it to my brother about a year later when I got a Canon SD1100, and it still works good to this day. I actually kind of miss it. Now, my most recent is the Panasonic FZ35.

When I look back to just 10 short years ago to where we are now I am astonished. Cameras have evolved so drastically. I was looking at old cameras a couple weeks ago for the heck of it, and read some reviews on this site. I came across a model (don't remember which, maybe Fuji) that had a 6x zoom. It looked quite a bit like my FZ35. I was surprised to say the least. I had forgot how different things were back then.

First digital P&S was a Nikon 5400 I picked up in June 2003.
Was fun, but lack of salable image quality caused me to stay with film until I picked up a Canon EOS 20D in spring of 2005.
That was the real turning point for me, haven't looked back (except for some nostalgia) since!
Photography a fading pastime
