Default Is Opticle zoom a must on a camera?

Is it that important? Or is fixed focus ok... I dont know what to buy...... Thanx

a fixed focal length is fine as long as you are willing to or have the opportunity to move in and out to frame your sublect. an optical zoom gives you much greater latitude on subject placement or yours.

Depends on what you're doing with the camera... for general "snapshots", a zoom isn't really necessary (but is nice to have). If you want to do real photography, a zoom is very important. Even when shooting just pictures of the kids or everyday scenes, a zoom will help you frame your picture.

Most inexperienced photographers try to put too much into a picture. Without a zoom, it's much tougher to really avoid overwhelming the subject of a picture with way too much background.

You can crop out a lot of unwanted "stuff" with software, but it's a pretty inefficient way to handle the problem because you're throwing away a lot of pixels. Better to zoom more and crop less.
