I just bought a used Canon DSD500 camera. It looked in mint condition.

When I got it home, I took several pictures using what I think's called the default setting.

The last couple of pictures were of a poorly lit place. As you might expect, the flash went off.

But the flash sounded unusually loud. Then I noticed .....smoke. Where, I wondered did that come from?

So I took another one. The same happened, but this time I was ready & a quick look showed that the smoke was coming from around the flash outlet. Naturally, the camera's being returned.

But what can have caused it? Dust? A defective gizmo of some sort? Has anybody else have this happen? Is it really serious & costly to repair?

Since starting this thread, I've found that a few other people have had a similar experience with the same model of camera -

so I added my own experience to it.
