Default travel friendly tripod

I will be travelling with all of my gear strapped to my backpack and therefore need the lightest, most compact tripod available. I will be shooting with a very small mini DV camcorder. The tripod must be very sturdy and allow the absolute smoothest pans, tilts, and vertical movement. A level balance would also be nice but is less impotant than the above. I am insistent on it being mid to full size (~5 ft. extdended) but would love for someone to convince me to buy a mini tripod. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Default monopod ??

Did you ever consider a monopod ?
I have a manfrotto #055 tripod , very steady , but too much heavy for travel
But the manfrotto monopod #334B is loveable , quick release : you squezze the hand level and 1 of the two sections dropdown to the right height (the other section is twist-lock).

For me, even the best tripod is a pain in the neck. Still, they're a necessary evil. You're asking a lot in your specifications. You will have to compromise somewhat, and you're going to have to spend some bucks. Have a look at the Gitzo line. They're pricy, but after several other brands that I hated, I think they are worth it.

Monfretto is a good pod, but I prefer Gitzo. Fiber pods are very light, though not as stable as metal.

You could get by with a cheaper brand, but you sound pretty fussy in your expectations. Your main problem may be finding a store that has a good variety that you can handle and compare.

Good luck.
