Default Scaning and Printing issues...

I've just entered the world of digital photography and so far I am loving it! I've been shooting pictures with my s400 and printing with my Canon i950 and am amazed by the results.

The problem I'm having is in scanning pictures and getting photo quality results while printing. Photos printed off my digital camera and then printed are indistinguishable from photo lab pictures. But when I try and scan an old film print and print it I get less than accurate color (or in this case black and white) reproduction. Anyone have similar troubles that has found a solution? BTW, I'm using Elements 2.0 as my editing software (not real good at using it yet, but I'm learning).

First thing I'd ask is what type, model and brand scanner are you using and is it capable of scanning photonegatives in with color?
