I decided to try RAW on my Panasonic FZ50 but when they show up they all come out in a deep purple? And it also makes a JPEG version of the same picture andthat looks fine. Need some help on what im doing wrong.

What software are you viewing the RAW files with?

Check the white balance setting that your RAW conversion software is set to. Usually, the converter defaults to the WB your camera was set at when the picture was taken, but check it anyway. The software that came with my Nikon has a weird WB setting (Full Spectrum Fluorescent, or somthing) that has an effect like what you describe on a more "normally" balanced capture.

The camera came with SILKYPIX and I downloaded PIXFILER.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"Okay now the pics look great when there in SILKYPIX or PIXFILER.But when I transfer them to MY PICTURES or PICASA2 for storage they come out completey purple? Hope I can figure this out RAW really does look good when I see it in SILKYPIX.

Sounds like a white balance issue.

If its a white balance issue where do I adjust it from? If I try and adjusting it from Picasa it just changes from dark purple to alight purple pic? And in my pictures there is no adjustment features at all with RAW. How do I adjust it from Silkypix if the picture allready looks good?

Serafin, it might help if you describe your workflow. Now, I know nothing about the two programs you are using, but the workflow you're using should resemble the following very basic description:

1) Open RAW file in the RAW conversion program.

2) Adjust image to your liking.

3) Save the adjusted image as a TIFF, JPEG or in the native file format of your editor for either archiving as-is or importing into another editor for further work using tools and techniques not provided by the RAW converter.

In #3, you're going to end up, sooner or later, with a converted image of the RAW file saved in My Pictures or whatever other location you choose. In theory, you should be able to double-click that converted image and have Image Preview (the default Windows image viewer) display the image -- and it should look like the final saved image, whether that final save was made from the RAW converter or another editing program.
Even if the image was saved in the native format of the program that edited it, when double-clicked, the editing program should display the image -- and it should look as it did upon the last save.

If you are following these basic steps and the archived image still comes out looking wacky, I can't account for it.

You say that the camera takes a RAW and a JPEG and the JPEG looks fine, so I have to figure that the problem is coming after the capture. If there were a radical white balance problem in the camera, the JPEG would display it, too.

Since the Jpegs look OK, it probably isn't white balance. My guess is that your Windows viewing software needs to be updated. Yours is a pretty recent camera, and Windows raw viewer may not have the correct profiles for it yet. Check for an update.

I think from your helpful answers ive figured it out. When you download the the RAW picture to Silkypixs on your computer I get a nice looking RAW picture for adjusting. Then when im done adjusting the pictureI want to transfer that pic to Picasa2 or My Pictures for storageand that RAW file converts it to a JPEG file which looks nice. And also leaves a 2nd pic of the originalRAW file for future usethat looks purple. Then if you want to make changes in the future you can take that RAW picturefile and put it back in Silkypix which makes the pic look normal againfor changes. Do I have the understanding correct? For some reason I thought RAW tranfers to the storage folder as RAW not JPEG. Does what I wrote make sense???
