Hi,

my name is Uwe and i am from germany.

In September we plan to travel to hawaii with a stopover in San Francisco for a few days.

Do you know any good shops, where we can buy several parts for my DSLR equipment ?

I'm using a Pentax K100D

Thanks in advance

Uwe

If you have relatives in the SF area, you're better off having them buy your equipment from B&H in New York (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/) and have it shipped to their place. B&H tends to have lower prices, plus you won't have to pay state/county sales tax. Better yet, if you're going to NY, you can check them out.

The best camera store in the SF Bay Area is actually located about 30 miles south of SF called Keeble & Shuchat (http://www.kandsphoto.com/activepages/main.html#). But within SF, you can always go to Calumet, which is a nationwide company (http://www.calumetphoto.com/ctl?ac.ui.pn=compinfo.CompStoreLocDetail&ac.co mp.locID=SF). If you're doing the touristy thing around downtown area, the best I've seen is Adolph Gasser (http://www.gassers.com/).

You can use google maps to find directions. (http://maps.google.com/)

I want to warn you though, just like any big cities in the US, there are a lot of camera stores in SF area that sell junk cheap stuff. They are usually located near touristy area and prey on them. You'll know which ones they are because they always have those bright neon signs. I would stay away from them.

Good Luck!

Hi rey,

thanks for your proposals.

We will stay in San Francisco only for two or three days, so we don't want to rent a car.
It will be difficult to reach the outer areas. But we will visit the shops you recommend downtown.

Do you have another recommodation for the area of Oakland ? Probably we will reach the united states via the airport of Oakland and we will rent a hotel room there.

Greetings Uwe.

The store in downtown SF, Adolf Gasser, is pretty decent. I was able to buy the hard-to-find Nikon 18-200VR from them.

I rarely go to Oakland, so I'm not familiar with camera stores there. There's also not much to see there.

You'll do fine without a car in SF. Actually, I would recommend you don't get a car, since it's hard to find parking there. When I go there, I usually take the train or ferry, and then just take the bus around SF. Here's the bus system's website (http://www.sfmta.com/cms/home/sfmta.sfmta). If you're coming from Oakland, I would recommend the BART train (http://bart.gov/).

Good Luck!

Hi rey,

thanks for your tipps and links.

I think you should work as a tourist guide

As we can see, most of the prices are much more cheaper than in germany. I only have to calculate the tax we have to pay if we travel back to germany.

Greetings Uwe
