I have two (wife and self), Olympus point-and-shoot cameras, both very similar. One is a Camedia D-545 Zoom (4.0 mp), the other a Camedia D-595 Zoom (5.0 mp), both purchased new.

The D-545 takes perfect shots at all settings under all lighting conditions. The D-595 shots are all "washed out" with natural lighting using both ‘Auto' and ‘Scene' settings.

Beach shots taken on a recent vacation with the D-595 all appear over exposed, as if the f-stop was too large. The same shot taken at the same time and with identical settings, with the D-545, are perfect.

Has anybody any thoughts as to what is happening and why? Is the camera a lemon?

There should be no reason for one camera to outperform the other to the extent you've described. It's possible your D-595 is defective. It's also possible that you (or someone else) might have accidentally changed some settings without realizing it, like ISO, exposure compensation, or metering. The best way for us to tell would be for you to post a couple of those washed out and over exposed pics for us to look at...right out of the camera preferably - just resize so they'll fit here.

There's no EXIF information with either pic.

Can you re-post without stripping the EXIF?

I'm afraid you lost me on that one! What is "EXIF" info?

Ok, I understand what it is. However, when I resampled the pics to reduce the file size that info disappeared and I can not retrieve it.

I'll repeat the exercise tomorrow in daylight and repost the pics.

Most cameras have a reset button (probably buried deep in the menus somewhere - check your manual). On the camera that is over-exposing, hit the reset. That will set everything back to factory defaults. This way, if some setting is way off and you don't realize it, it will be reset to it's default setting.

Now go and take a few pics with the camera and see if the same problem still exists. If it does not, then it was some setting that was way off. But, if the problem persists, then you have a fault in the camera and it will need to be serviced.

I had checked the "All Reset" function before starting this thread. It is "On"

Incidentally, flash pictures seem to be the opposite..... The D-595 tends to underexpose the picture.

The EXIF information for both of the subject pics follows....
