which is the best lense to have a 28mm to 280mm or a 35mm to 420mm? I'm not sure how the wide angle thing works....

A lot of people find that 35mm just isn't wide enough, especially if they take a lot of shots indoors.

A 35mm lens provides a 62 degree angle of view, while a 28mm lens provides a 74 degree angle of view. This wide angle of view helps when you're trying to capture a landscape, seascape, or cityscape, or an interior or a large group of people.

On the other hand, if what you're after is wildlife or sports, the 420mm might be better than the 280mm.

Of course, there's always a dSLR, to which you can attach a lens that's appropriate for whatever you happen to be shooting at the time.
