Is anyone else disappointed that the new Nikon D3 has approximately the same 12 megapixel count while Canon has uped the ante to 21 MP???

No! Bigger pixels = less noise = higher usable ISO = better dynamic range.

I agree with Bob, though it doesn't really matter since both my wife and bank manager would be upset if I bought either of those cameras.

I still need to read the actual announcement...
But I fully agree. We need higher quality pixels, not more of them.
I can print great 11x14 images even after a little bit of cropping, and I'm only using an 8MP camera. 8x10 is easy even with creative cropping.

How often do you need to print larger than that? Almost no one does!
I want more dynamic range, or more flexability in my aperture choice (that higher ISO provides.)

I have a nikon D50 and have printed a few 30" x 20" photos and they dont look bad and thats only 6.1MP so 12 is more than enough. I cant wait to see a few comparison photos between the cameras at High ISO, the nikon should be as good if not better for once against the Canon.

No, not at all. If the cameras perform as advertised Nikon will have placed themselves firmly at the top of the prosumer sports/wildlife market with the d300 - soundly trouncing canon 40d. And their d3x looks to be good competition for Canon 1dmkIII and 1dsMkIII in one swoop.

More MP = better camera is a myth. Glad to see a manufacturer putting some emphasis on things that are actually important to photography.

And, did I mention I'm a Canon guy? So, no homeboy brand loyalty here.

But, it's all just conjecture - we have to see how the cameras actually perform. But disappointed in the feature set? Not in the least.

If you want more megapixels, then just wait until PMA 2008 when Nikon will most likely announce the D3x at possiblby 18PM or so.

As for the current D3... All I can say is that I am so happy that Nikon has FINALLY come out with a full frame dSLR. Now, I am anxiously awaiting the professional reviews of the camera.
