5mp for $400usd is fairly amazing! One thing that I find interesting is there aren't really any 6mp or higher consumer level digital cameras on the market or coming very soon other than the S7000 for under say $1000..... I wouldn't be surprised if the market gets bombarded with alot of 6-8Mpixel pro-sumer cameras around and just after the christmas season this year.

I would love to see something like a 5 and 6 Mpixel version of the Oly UZ series.... say a c-760uz and a c-770uz. :P I don't think I would trade my 750uz in on a 5mpixel version but a 6mpixel version is a different story.

Here's the cam's own page.

Note that the promotion features:
5Mp for $399, and
Extremely competitive pricing

This cam will appeal to consumers just smart
enough to be mesmerized by the 5Mp, but
not exposed enough to digital photography
to inspect the tradeoffs made here.

This is similar to GW's plasma displays, which
are quite inexpensive for their size, but not
for their resolution.

GW has an interesting apparent strategy -
deliver a few most-demanded or most-
appealing features at ultra-low prices, and
don't worry about the rest.

i find it even more amazing that they have a 4MP camera with 3x optical zoom for $199. now obviously i wouldnt expect a Nikon/Cannon picture quality, but it's still probably takes good enough pictures for your average consumer.

i would give people a little more credit. when they see Plasma's and digicams at ultra low prices, they can probably figure out that the quality won't be up to the level of other big name manufactures. but on the other hand, the quality is still GOOD. and easily good enough for your average consumer. i've seen the plasma's, and they look great. i havent checked out the digicams yet, but am looking forward to it.

besides this can only mean good things for consumers, if their digicams become the HUGE success that their plasma's have become, it will force other manufactues to cut their profit margins and drop prices to compete.

Any idea what is the manufacturer for these models? Will Steve's Digicams be reviewing them soon?

I believe Argus is the manufacturer for one of the5 MP cameras and, the sister camera got pretty much panned.
Skanhex is the Mfg. for the 4MP one and, I really know nothing about them.

I am still stunned that people interested enough to join a digicam website can be so obsessed with megapixels.

Most consumers need no more than 3mp ... 4mp max.

Well, get over it

Gateway has obviously figured out that consumers
considering a digicam are obsessed with Mp.

> Most consumers need no more than 3mp ... 4mp max.

And they only "need" 100HP cars, 500MHz PCs, 20W
stereos and 25in TVs. When a spec becomes a
prestige factor, people tend to get more than a little
irrational about.
