I've been thinking about getting Photoshop Elements for a while and wondering which version to go for.

On Amazon they have PSE 5 for about £17, and version 6 for around £56 - is it worth paying the extra cash for the latest version?

The difference between the versions is described here:

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/upgrade/

I didn't know about the newer version until I read your message, but it looks good to me.

BTW, I think the cost you're seeing for PSE5, plus the cost to upgrade to PSE6 is greater thatn the cost for PSE6. If you're looking for a cheap photo editing program, there are plenty of free ones out there. And you can download the trial verson of PSE6 to see if you like it more than the free ones or the otherones that have trial versions.

I went from Photoshop Album to Elements 6 and so cannot make a comparison with Elements 5. I would recommend that you buy a good teaching book to go with either version since there is no manual as such (help is on-line), so there is an extra cost. The functionality is very high, but it takes a lot of learning to get the most out of the program. (I am currently half way through the 560 page "Missing Manual" by Barbara Brundage!). Photoshop Album provided a good organiser, but Elements provides comprehensive editing capabilities plus the Organiser.

V5 came with a manual, but V6 does not. I just bought V6 but have not had a chance to play with it yet.

Look for PSE books by Scott Kelby. Written in cookbook style so you don'e need to read the whole book.
