Hi there!

I am flying to New York next week and I am planning to buy myself a digital camera (Canon 450D most probably). However, I do not know the Big Apple very well and I will not have all that much time off meetings. Hence I was wondering if anyone can recommend a well-stocked, reliable and inexpensive camera shop on down-town Manhattan.

Many thanks for your advice.

Mikael

B&H is pretty much the Mecca of camera shops in this area, and has an excellent reputation. Their phone # is 800-331-8506.

B&H is the only place in New York I would shop.
Ron

PS: You will see many shops with great prices, but you don't really know what you are buying - please stay away....

B&H is the gold standard for NY photo equipment: likely there are others as good, but none as well known. Do check out their hours, they are shut down for various religious holidays that very few other shops pay attention to.

I live and work in the NYC area, there is no better selection than B&H. The store is open around the jewish calendar. they close at 2pmevery friday and are closed on Saturday for Sabath. We are now coming into a Jewish holiday season and they will be closed for over a week starting 4/18 so be careful of their hours.

The other thing to be aware of is that NYC has a tax rate of 8.75%, higher than most other areas.

There are many, many photo stoers in the midtown part of the city, but nothing compares to B&H in knowledge or supply. Tey are located on 34th street and 9th ave, 2 blocks west of Madison Square Garden.

The only other NYC store I would recommend is Adorama on W.19th st. Their prices are about the same as B&H but it's a smaller store and you might get a little more personalized attention, something to think of if you don't know exactly what you want. Adorama's store hours are the same as B&H's.

If you find that you need some camera accessory, lens, filter, camera bag etc. and B&H is closed you might want to try J&R located downtown opposite city hall. They're opened 7 days a week during normal business hours.

Thank you so much for your advice. Now I have know where to go. Compared to Europe, prices are supposed to be lower (esp because of the present exchange rates). However, having checked the B&H home page, I do find the price difference actually smaller than expected.

Thank you all again!

B&H will still be likely closed. Even if it isnt, why go there? It's a mad house!
I mean the place is a zoo, you get no help, you wait on lines too long, you needa guideto get around, and a bloodhound to be found.

Just order online. Try Adorama, J&R, Calumet. Best bet is to buy local.
