The math simply eludes me. Which is larger.

1/2.5

1/1.8

Just think of the sizes as fractions (which they are - but they don't really relate directly to either inches or millimeters). Dividing by a smaller number gives a larger result. There really isn't all that much difference between them, though.

1/2.5 Area 24.7 sq mm

1/1.8 Area 38.2 sq mm

The nomenclature is more history than maths

Sorry for my original post. I misunderstood your question.

What you're looking at isa fraction. The larger the numerator (the number on top), the larger the value; the larger the denominator (the number on the bottom), the smaller the value.

Since 1/2.5 has a larger denominator than 1/1.8, 1/2.5 is smaller than 1/1.8.
