A photographer that I goto church with is getting rid of this lens. He said he just does not need it and said he probably has only taken 45 shots with it total. He said he loved it but it's just to heavy.

This is what I know...

Brand : SIGMA (APO)
Maximum FL : 400mm
Maximum Aperture: F/5.6
Mount: I'm not completely sure, nor is he. He said he used it on his Nikon D80 but the AF was slow. I think it's a Nikon F Mount Lens (What do you think?)

Price: $185

No manuals, No original packaging.
Comes with caps and a pistol grip for handheld use. Lens has tripod mount.

It's older and says made in Japan.
--I wanted to mount it on my NIKON D40. (Which I know does not have a motor in it to use AF with F mounts)

Should I get the lens? Is it a good buy? Is it a good lens?

According to photodo.com and photozone.de users, the Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO Macro is a very good lens, but the non-macro version isn't.

It will definately look cool on your D40, but if it's not the Macro version, combined with the fact that it won't autofocus on the D40, I'd leave it for someone else.

It would indeed look "cool". I will hold out until I find a macro version.

Thanks, Your just a sewer of knowledge.

If you're looking for a supertelephoto, KEH.com has a Nikkor 300mm f/4.0 (a very good lens) in different conditions for from $695 to $415. I don't know if they'll autofocus on the D40.

I'll check it out. I really need to buy a D80 so my options for lenses could open up more. The only lenses that will focus automatically are AF-S, AF-I.

That's the drawback of the D40 (and everyone knows that) but it was so inexpensive and came with two lenses in the kit! :-)
