Default digital camera and depth of field

Hi, I am looking for a digital camera for the first time and am confused about the specs. Most of the cameras I have looked at only stop down to f4 or f8 instead of 22-32 for traditionl SLR's does this mean I will have very little control over depth of field? thanks,
dave

Don't forget that f-stop is a ratio of the focal length and the lens opening...as the focal lengths for digitals are much smaller than their 35mm counterparts (as the CCD is much smaller) the lens opening is much smaller; the largest opening (f2.8) on my digital is the about same as the smallest opening (f22) on my SLR...any smaller than F8 on the digital would be a microscopic opening. In regards to DOF on digital the complaint is just the opposite...it's hard to get a blurred background on digitals.
