Default camera recommendations?

Any recommendatios on digital cam's at about $400 US ? I am looking for a compact but still want high image quality and at least aperture priority and shutter priorityl. I have been looking at the Pentax Optio 550 and the C-740 Ultra Zoom. thanks, dave

I bought my fiancee a Kodak D6490 or whatever it is that just came out. Its 4mp with a 10x Opitcal for $500. (450 from Dell) It has a very neat view finder on it. 100% digital, which is kinda neat in the aspect that it gives you the shutter speeds/AP/ISO's etc just like on an SLR...

Overall, I am highly impressed for the quality of the camera, the features, and the image quality (Even at this odd high JPG compression) If I was forced to sell my D10 for some reason, Id be happy with the Kodak.

Default Look at the Minolta F300

I think the Minolta Dimage F300 is a neat
little camera. I think Minolta might be phasing
them out, but now you should be able to find
them very reasonably priced. The photo quality
is superb.

I have the C740Z and really like the long zoom. You can view sample pics at

click on the gallery for the C740

I like the long zoom on the Olympus C-740 UZ, and have managed to get things right, although not always. But nothing a tripod can't fix! Here's a sample photo at full Telephoto 10x I snapped:

Another thing I liked about the C-740 was the battery life. I'm using 2 sets of 4 AA 1800mAh NiMH's and what I put in yesterday, and it only died this night.

Just a comment, you must have done a lot of shooting in that time, because some may think by your comments the batteries may only last 24 hours. I don't do that much, and I can keep the same batteries in for a few weeks. Of course if you never take any pictures they can last for months!
