It was announced in 2002, but then technical difficulties held it up. It was then announced that it would go on sale the end of this month. That remained the status for some time, but I recently heard that they are still having tecnical difficulties with the stabilization and it has been returned to R&D for more work. At the moment, there is no release date scheduled.

While I have to confess that I am VERY interested in this lens, given its very rocky history so far, I think I would let others be the "paying beta testers" on this one even if they did release it this month!

Thanks Ted..kind of what I suspected..I guess I'll bite the somewhat larger bullet and get the Canon 100-400..even though some feel its a bit soft on the long end

Its a bit soft compared to the 400 f5.6 (and clearly than the other, faster 400mm lenses.) But it's still quite acceptable (at least to me.)

Check out any of my posts in the wildlife section which are by me. I believe all of them are with the 100-400 @ 400.

I just did one of a barred owl, and one of a green heron. I think both show off the capabilities of the lens quite well.

Are there any other stabilized zooms except for the 3 from Canon (28-135, 75-300 and 100-400) and the upcoming Sigma 80-400?
