First thing you have to do is define the term "public place"
I find in my job that many people think that just because a place is open to the public that it is a public place. A shopping center for example or an amusement park these are private property and the owners have a right to make any rule they choose.

This may be true, however if you take a photo of a building located on that property from the public sidewalk across the street, then you are fine.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I just have a Nikon Coolpix L18 camera. I got it for Christmas and I really enjoy using it.
You should be able to on public property. On private property it might be another matter.

That's a pretty small camera, just act like a tourist and no one will notice. :-)
