I have a 18-55mm lens and have bought a Hoya 55mm UV filter, but the filter won't seem to go on. I've tried pushing it slightly, and I've tried screwing it but it isn't working.

I can't find any online diagrams at all.

Help?

Is this one of the Nikkor 18-55mm kit lenses you were asking about in a recent thread?

If so, these lens models have threads for 52mm filters (not 55mm like the Hoya filter you purchased). If you can return it, get a 52mm filter instead.

If you click on the specifications tab after selecting a lens in the product listings at nikonusa.com, you can find filter thread size:

If you buy a 52mm to 55mm step up ring, that may let you use the filter if there is enough room for the adapter in the lens barrel. You can find some at popular vendors of photo gear. Here are some step up rings at B&H:

But, with a wider (18mm) lens like that, it's usually a bad idea to use a 52mm to 55mm step up ring, since you may see more vignetting (darkening of corners) than desired with some lenses and filters.

If you really want to use a UV filter (personally, I don't with digital), you're probably better off getting a filter that's the correct size (52mm in the case of a Nikkor 18-55mm kit lens).

Damn! Haha.
I'll take it back to the shop and try and swap.
Thanks for the reply

And also, thanks for the guidance on what camera I should get. I love my Nikon
