Default Camera around $500 - $600

Have been reading a lot about the G3 and G5, and am under the impresssion that the G3 is the way to, results and ease of use are good, and again many seem to think that the difference in price (anything from $60 -200) is not worth it for one more megapixel.
Problem is my wife is used to her Olympus 2100UZ with its 10x optical zoom and stabilized lens and that anything with less zoom is not practical. And no, I cannot afford a 300D!! It' too damn heavy anyway, tried a friend's with her telephoto lens and it was like carrying a bazooka. So please which one should I go for, 3 or 5, or is there an alternative, with similar features, and similar price to the G3 (at this time around $500 or less).

Since your wife is using the Uzi, I would wait for the Panasonic FZ10 to enter the market. There are many good 10X ultra zoom cameras but none with the image stablizer.

I own more than one UZI, and if I were looking to replace it, I'd have to give strong consideration to the FZ10 also. However, there is also wisdom in waiting until it comes out, get the bug report, and then wait for the price to drop a bit. It's all according to your needs and priorities!
