Default Too many choices - which camera setup to take to the US

Hi all,

I was feeling bored so a trivial post to get away from the what camera should I buy and do you like my photo questions LOL.

I'm off to the US for a week for my companies annual sales conference..... it's in NJ and I will be at a variety of evening events from highly formal to casual and everything in between. There will also be a golf day on the Tues.

Obviously weight is an issue as is how much I will actually get to use it so in this scenario what would you take.

dSLR options (all Canon)

500D
30D
5D
1D mkIII
5D mkII

Lenses for above that I would consider taking

24-105mm f4 L IS
Sigma 24-70mm f2.8
Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 (an option for the 500D and 30D)
70-200mm f2.8 L IS

P&S

Panasonic TZ5
Canon SX1

Flash for any Canon be it dSLR or P&S
430EX
580EX

I know what I want to take but not yet sure I will and fancy seeing how others would play this and the reasons behind that decision.

Oh there are also bonus points for anyone who can tell me what I would choose to take!!!!

Small print
Bonus points have no monetary value, they can't be swapped for anything real, they are purely there to make you feel good and let you know that you are almost as crazy as me!!

Being that it is a business trip primarily, your schedule will probably not have as much time as you would like for much photography, other than at the meetings, etc. I would probably opt for something small and light ( and since it's New Jersey, reasonably inexpensive, so when it gets stolen, I wouldn't have lost as much)

Edit: The above was all in fun, of course. If you are going primarily on business, but with some photo ops, probably the 500D and 17-70 would do what you need, with reasonable size/weight. Of course, if the point is to impress business associates.....

Do you come to this side of the pond very often?

Is there going to be family or friends with you that might use your equipment when you can't?

How much free time are you really going to have?

Will you need to take pictures during the company events?

Can you afford loosing the equipment (God forbid) if you meet up with a street punk or the airlines go nutz-o?

Most likely you are going to be happier with a simple kit. The 500D or the 30D and a single lens (Sigmna 17-70) would be my suggestion. Oh, and always carry one of the TZ5.... it weighs next to nothing and can make up for the lack of a big lens.

I can't imagine you not taking a dSLR, so I'll say the 30D with the Sigma 17-70 and the 430EX flash, and maybe the SX1 for backup.

Mark, there's not a hell of a lot of incentive to win that prize!

Peripatetic, you win the prize for what I want to take (well plus the 580EX) but I'm being sensible and taking the SX1 and probably the 430EX as there won't be too much chance of shooting. I was tempted to just go with the TZ5 but thing the better video and general performance of the SX1 will be called for.
