Default AF-S lens help

This is my first post, and unfortunately I need some help. I have a new D3000 body that I'm trying to use a Nikkor ED 18-135 AF-S IF DX lens. The autofocus does not seem to be working. Is there something simple that would cause this problem. The camera will shoot, but it just won't focus. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Make sure the a/m switch on the lens is set to A (autofocus) and not on M (manual).
