Default Nikon D70 "RO9"

Hi there a few years ago i gave my son "who lives away from home" a D70 .. now photography is not his hobbie but uses the camera, he has just rang to say he keeps getting up RO9 and the zoom can't seen to focus right away .... he has retained most of his shots but lost some images to the BLACK screen.....
I think he has his setting wrong but as i can't inspect the camera I can't think what is wrong....can anyone help me..... has this happened to you????
Regards Barbara

"R09" means the camera is busy doing something. Likely, since your saying it's happening during Auto focus, there is either not enough light for the Af to achieve focus, or he is closer than the minimum focus distance. The other possibility is that the camera buffer is full, but that should only occur during burst shooting.
