Default Shudder lag on Digicams

So im looking into buying a digicam, and im asked my friend what he thought of them. He said they are ok other than the fact that they have bad shudder lag vs. a standard SLR camera. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on this. is it a big deal?

It can be a big deal especially with any kind of action picture. Most overcome this by pressing the "shutter" button half way to focus and get exposure at the spot they want to snap the picture. then they snap the picture. this does eliminate a lot of the lag. so far with the few cameras i have tried, the dSLR cmaeras are the fastest and come extremely close to film SLRs. A lot of the time I use continuous mode on my camera and snap 5 frames in a few seconds depending on shutter speed. If you don't care much for action shots then shutter lag really won't be a big deal.

You can learn to overcome shutter lag with practice (but won't be any good for unanticipated shots)...this is a shot of a railway crossing I took from a fast moving train, http://www.volcano.photobucket.com/a.../defeatlag.jpg

BTW it's shuTTer lag, although it can make some people shudder!

i just came across the DiMAGE Z1 by minolta, it sports a 1/10 of a second shutter lag, which they say is around the same as a standard SLR, if anyone else looking for a digi and is worried about shutter lag.

Shutter Lag does not equal Autofocus Lag.

The time you're looking at is after the camera is prefocused (after the camera is focused using a half shutter button press.

Autofocus lag is what takes the longest in a digital camera. The Z1 is much faster than most (around 1/2 second on average, depending on amount of zoom used).
