Seriously this is why people should only talk about a subject if they shoot it, well I'm assuming this guy doesn't shoot sports, if he does then they will be pretty poor LOL.

I think the best approach was the one you took, although if the guy left and the older man was there I would have suggested he might get a 2nd opinion.

It's amazing what the so called experts come up with. You handled well, I don't think I could have kept from laughing or calling BS on the guy.
My wife and I were in a box store a couple of years ago, soon after Canon released one of the new Rebel cameras. We just stopped in to take a quick look at it to see some of it's new features. The salesman was more than happy to get the camera out from behind the glass for us to handle it and he told us some of the basics about it. When we started asking him more specific questions, he became more and more uneasy and nervous, then very abruptly said "and over here we have Nikon" and walked off. We laugh about that to this day!!

I would have taken that 50D out of the bag, pulled out your micro fiber cloth and started polishing your biggest white lens you had on you :P

I feel ya.

Buying a camera in a coffee shop? Taking advice from a camera store clerk?
I'd have to either intervene or run away, run away.

I know this scenario well though in my case it usually involves me at a Staples, Best Buy, etc. where some minimum wage drone is trying to sell soccer mom/dad a PC that does 200% more than they need at 150% of the price they would pay by shopping online. "You need this i7 to check email and surf the web." I have been building and repairing PCs for over a decade so it's hard to listen to their drivel and watch them rip people off.

The trick there is to hang around long enough to hear a question the salesperson can't ask, then jump in and answer it. Then proceed to shoot down everything the salesperson said.
