Default resealing a water proof camera?

hi, i have been reading that these "tough" proof type of cameras such as the sony tx5, Panasonic DMC-FT2 etc will be only good for about 1 year then you will need to take them to a specialist vendor to get them re-sealed.

does anyone know how accurate this info is ? could you do the seals your self or not ?

(sorry if this is in the wrong section but was not sure where to put it)

I haven't seen any of these type cameras up close, but would guess that the tough coating is something like neoprene or other elastomer, and that any sealing problems which occur would likely be where there is access for battery, memory card, etc.
Wear at these places could, possibly cause waterproofing problems, but unless you are using it underwater, you probably wouldn't notice.
One way to prevent it might be to use a little glycerin on the seaing edges - a very light coating would lubricate and prevent wear.

The folks that inhabit the Underwater photos forum will probably know more.
